Pixel 2 & Pixel 2 XL.

Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL the Google’s answer to Apple’s iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.

Phone by Google

Google added these two flagship killers to the Pixel lineup. Loaded the phone with a great hardware, a smooth software and took out the headphone jack, Yes the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL doesn’t have a traditional headphone jack, I don’t understand one thing, why in this world are companies removing headphone jacks on their premium line up. Now how can I charge and listen to stuff at the same time…??

Let’s just keep my feelings aside.Aesthetically speaking if you have taken any of the Pixel 2 devices in your hand and I bet you had a second thought for this device, asked yourself, “is it made of Plastic?”, you are wrong my friend, both of these devices are made of Aluminium unibody, unlike most of the premium phones in the market, with hybrid coating, which makes you feel that it’s made up of plastic. The Dual Tone back, a legacy from its predecessor is still there, most of you guys thinking why that dual tone with Glass or ceramic, because of the use of ceramic or glass improved your network connectivity. And this time Google has added a cool ascent to the power button with a different colour which is eye-catching.

The Pixel 2 comes in two sizes (Obviously). The Pixel 2 is 5.7-inches in length, 2.7-inches in width and has a thickness of 0.3-inches. Pixel 2 weighs 143 grams. Whereas Pixel 2XL is 6.2-inches in length, 3.0-inches in width and has a thickness of 0.3 inches. Pixel 2XL weighs 175-grams. The colour options to choose between are as follows:

Pixel 2 :

pixel- BLACK4

Just Black

pixel - WHITE

Clearly White

pixel - BLUE

Kinda Blue

Pixel 2XL :

pixel XL - BLACK

Just Black

pixel XL - WHITE4

Both the devices have back-mounted Finger Print Sensor, which is positioned right, easily reachable and distinguishable, unlike in the case of Samsung’s where you accidentally hit the camera instead of the fingerprint scanner, if your finger is long enough to reach the Sensor and its a superfast FingerPrint Sensor.

Now speaking of the hardware which made this device to shine out of the crowd. The Camera, which is rated 98 DxO mark (overall), the highest rated camera in 2017 and till date*.Instead of a Dual camera system, Google opted for Dual Pixel Sensor. The risk is taken by Google, to not go for a dual camera system instead to go with a single camera system and use software ( machine learning ), has made the competition to go up a notch.

(*till date refers to the date 15/01/2018)

What makes this camera special is Google just did more of everything to make this hardware a masterpiece. I mean Google added more of HDR+ processing, more of hardware, more of Artificial intelligence and Machine learning, and more of image stabilization. When you click a photo of a dog or a person the AI runs a search through its neural network to find photos labelled dog or person and adjust the exposure, portrait mode focus etc and accordingly. Instead of a bigger Sensor module like the one on the pixel, Google opted for a Smaller for the Pixel 2 by Sony. Because to opt for a Dual pixel sensor they need a smaller sensor. Along with the AI capabilities, the addition of more HDR+ plus processing has made this camera capable of capturing awesome pictures in the dark (lowlight Photos). The pixel 2 and the 2XL have the f1.8 lens, which takes more light than f2 lenses on the previous Pixel phones. Not only Google has packed the Camera with all this hardware but they have dedicated chip for the image processing, the Visual Core, but its still* not used for any image processing. According to CNET, the phones(pixel2 and Pixel 2XL) will be using the capabilities of the chip in future with software updates.

(*still refers to the Chip being not used till 15/1/2018)

Technically speaking the rear camera is 12MP With as said dual pixel sensor, autofocus, with optical and electronic image stabilizing and which records videos from 720p to 4k. Whereas in the front there is an 8MP camera with fixed focus and video recording capabilities from 480p to 1080p.

Now let’s keep the Google’s Camera MAgic aside and talk what this device has got under the hood. This beast is powered by Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 835 and with Qualcomm® Adreno™ 540 GPU. These both devices run onAndroid 8.0 aka Android OREO and a guaranteed OS and security updates for 3 year’s (claimed as per Google).

Both the devices have 4Gb LPDDRx Ram and 64Gb of onboard storage. Google provides an unlimited storage for your photos and videos on their cloud. But there’s a bummer you get Unlimited original-quality storage for photos and videos taken with Pixel until Jan. 15, 2021, and high-quality storage for photos taken with Pixel afterwards

Google did not pack the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL with a major hardware difference between them, the only difference that could be pointed out is between their displays, the Pixel 2 comes with a 5.0-inch Full HD (1920x1080p) AMOLED Display at 441ppi and with 16:9 Aspect Ratio and its covered with a 2.5D Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5 . Whereas Pixel 2 XL comes with a 6.0-inch QHD+ (2880 x 1440p) pOLED at 538ppi with 18:9 Aspect Ratio, yes an 18:9 display Google is also into the trend of 18:9 displays. Talking of the displays, both the displays are Always-on display with super contrast ratio, True black level and 16.77 million colours colour depth.

Both the devices have Active Edge™ feature, where you squeeze your phone edges, which in turn provokes a function. In the case of Pixel’s, it calls the Google Assistant and it isn’t customisable as HTC’s.

The device is IP67 water and dustproof certified. That means you can take a dip with your phone in your swimming pool*

(*Protected from dust and capable of withstanding water immersion
between 15 cm and 1 meter for 30 minutes, read this before jumping off the diving board)

Both of the pixel devices have front firing Stereo speakers, that means a great audio quality. Yes, they Sound Great due to front firing systems and due to which there is no obstruction by our hands or loss of audio quality due to firing away from listeners. Both the devices support for Qualcomm® AptX™ and AptX HD™ audio codecs. To know how AptX™ works click here.

Not only  Pixel 2  has great audio quality but with the help of microphones, it can identify the song playing in the background. The Now Playing Function Identifies the song and gives you the information by notifications. Now no need to worry when you are in a coffee shop and an awesome song is playing and don’t know the name of the song.

Talking about battery life, both the devices have 6+ hours of battery life with steaming on youtube, GPS kept on, normal camera usage and with Automattic brightness on. The battery capacity on Pixel 2 is 2700mAh and whereas on Pixel 2Xl it’s 3520mAh. Both the phones have fast charging capabilities, you get 7* hours of battery life with  15* minutes of charging on both the Phones. The Pixel 2 gets fully charged within 1 hour and 15 minutes.
